What Is A Direct Cremation?

An unattended funeral – often referred to as a direct cremation – is a simple option where the cremation takes place without a formal service or any mourners present. Unlike a traditional funeral, there is no ceremony at the crematorium, and the deceased is not prepared for viewing beforehand.

This option is chosen for a variety of reasons, including personal wishes, financial considerations or the desire for a more private and informal farewell. We charge £1700.00 to provide this service.

How Does An Unattended Funeral Work?

With an unattended funeral or direct cremation through Hickton Family Funeral Directors:

  • The deceased is placed in a simple coffin.
  • They are transported to the crematorium in a discreet, private ambulance.
  • The cremation takes place on a scheduled date and time, but without a service or attendees.
  • The ashes are then returned to the family, if desired, allowing for a personal memorial or scattering at a later date.

Options For An Unattended Funeral

While an unattended direct cremation does not include a formal service at the crematorium, there are ways to incorporate a personal farewell before or after the cremation if desired.

Examples include:

  • A funeral service before cremation – A ceremony can be held at a religious venue, funeral home or another meaningful location, which is then followed by an unattended cremation.
  • A small service at our funeral home – Families may choose an intimate farewell at one of our funeral homes before the coffin is taken to a crematorium for an unattended funeral.
  • A separate memorial service – Some families choose to organise a private gathering, celebration of life or religious service at a later date.

Is A Direct Cremation Right For You?

A direct cremation offers a straightforward and cost-effective option, but it is important to consider the wishes and emotions of all close friends and family members. We recommend discussing this decision with loved ones to ensure it aligns with their needs and expectations.

We also recommend that if you are considering a direct cremation, you use a local company such as ourselves. Many direct cremation companies advertise on TV, but they are nationwide and use only one crematorium in one part of the UK.
